Why time differences change during the year
Many countries move their clocks forward in their summer and back in their winter, but not on the same dates. That means the gap between the UK and another place can change by an hour for a few weeks at a time.
The US and Canada change on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. The UK changes on the last Sundays of March and October. For about three weeks in spring and one week in autumn, New York is 4 hours behind the UK instead of the usual 5.
Most of the EU changes at exactly the same moment as the UK, so Paris, Madrid and Berlin stay one hour ahead all year.
South-east Australia and New Zealand have summer time during the UK winter. Sydney is 9 hours ahead of the UK in the British summer, 10 hours ahead for a few weeks in October and in late March to early April, and 11 hours ahead in the British winter.
India, Japan, China, the UAE and Singapore do not use daylight saving. Their difference from the UK is one hour smaller while the UK is on BST.
GMT, UTC and BST
UTC is the world's reference time, kept by atomic clocks. Time zones are written as offsets from it, such as UTC+5:30 for India. GMT is the UK's winter time and is equal to UTC. British Summer Time is UTC+1. A few zones use 30 or 45 minute offsets, including India (UTC+5:30) and Nepal (UTC+5:45).

Why does the time difference with New York change?

Is GMT the same as UTC?
For everyday purposes, yes. UTC is the scientific standard kept by atomic clocks and GMT is the time zone based on it. Both are UTC+0.
Which countries have the same time as the UK?
