How school years differ across the UK
England and Wales: three terms, autumn (September to December), spring (January to Easter) and summer (after Easter to late July), each with a one-week half term. Maintained schools in England must open for 190 days a year. Councils set dates for their own schools, and academy trusts set their own.
Scotland: schools go back in mid-August and break up in late June or early July. Councils set the dates, which also include local holiday Mondays.
Northern Ireland: schools usually start in late August or early September and finish on 30 June, with a long summer holiday in July and August.
Universities set their own term dates, often in two semesters or three terms that differ from schools. For how terms usually fall and where to find your school's exact dates, see school term dates.
