How the date of Easter is set
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon on or after 21 March. Churches don't use the real Moon for this: they use tables of an "ecclesiastical" full moon, fixed in the calculation known as the computus. The result is that Easter can fall on any date from 22 March to 25 April. The Royal Observatory Greenwich explains the rule in more detail.
The latest possible date, 25 April, next happens in 2038. The earliest, 22 March, won't come round again until 2285.
Orthodox churches use the same rule applied to the older Julian calendar, so their Easter is usually later. Orthodox Easter 2027 is Sunday 2 May, five weeks after the Western date. In 2028 both fall on 16 April.

In England and Wales, large shops (over 280 square metres) must close on Easter Sunday. Smaller shops can open.
